“Cool!” Kenzie said. “Can I watch?”

“Sure,” Sam said. To Lacey, “You okay with that?”

“Oh, absolutely,” Lacey said. “I just wonder how many of these things we’re going to go through. They’re pretty heartbreaking.”

“I don’t know,” Sam said. “She’s calling the shots. All we can do is go along.”

Silently Lacey agreed. She realized that their peek into these lives, however distressing, was nothing compared to Andi’s experience living them. If Andi could relive them again with all the pain and suffering, the three Fireclouds could bear witness to them without complaint.

They gathered in the living room, Sam on the couch and Lacey and Kenzie in chairs beside him. Spooky decided Kenzie’s warm kitchen chair was too comfy to abandon, and slept on without them. Lacey started her digital recorder and set it down near Sam’s head.

“All right,” she started. “Let’s begin by taking a few deep breaths. Pull the air into your lungs, filling your lungs completely… holding it a moment… then letting it out, emptying your lungs completely. Again.”

By now it was easy for Lacey to recognize the signs of Sam slipping into trance: the easy rise and fall of his chest, the movement of his eyes under closed lids, the relaxed curl of his hands at his side. She was aware of Kenzie beside her, leaning forward and watching her dad with curious intent. Kenzie had never witnessed such an exercise, and obviously found it fascinating. She would also glance over at Lacey occasionally, and Lacey would smile in return.

As Lacey continued to talk Sam down, he settled more comfortably into the cushions of the couch, his breathing became deeper, and he cleared his throat and swallowed. That was Lacey’s cue.

“What’s going on?” she asked. “What is she showing you?”

He swallowed again. “San Francisco,” he said. “Not… now. There’s no bridge. Years ago.”

“Do you know what year it is?” Lacey asked.

“Nineteen… twenty,” he said, piecing it out as Andi gave it to him.

“And where in San Francisco are you?” Lacey asked. “Can you identify the area?”

Sam took a breath. “Chinatown,” he said. “A nice two-story home set back a few streets from the commercial area. It’s taller than it is wide—the lots are not very big there—but it’s a nice home, well-cared for.”

That’s a relief, Lacey thought. No abject poverty in this life.

“And what’s happening there?” she asked.

“There’s a woman there,” he said. “She’s about thirty, tall and slender. Stately, I would say. She’s wearing an emerald Chinese dress, a cheongsam, with a gold dragon design on it. It suits her slim figure. Very elegant. Her hair is pulled back into a French twist, and she’s wearing gold and diamond earrings.”

Lacey glanced over at Kenzie and mouthed, “Wow.” Quite a step up from an Irish mud hut or an ex-slave’s cabin.

“What is she doing?” Lacey asked.

“A… housekeeper, or a nanny, has just put a baby to bed. The housekeeper is leaving, and the woman goes to check on the baby. The baby is in a white crib on one side of the master bedroom.
